Father's Day, Family and Fun

Happy Father's Day!  We had a lovely weekend celebrating with family.  On Saturday we met a lot of the Van Heukelums at Mary's cousin's house for a picnic and visiting.  Rebecca and Abram had a great time with some of their cousins.  It was great to see everyone and catch up a bit.
Sunday we celebrated as a family.  We went to church, opened presents, grilled for lunch (Justin's request:), played outside and walked to Cone World for an ice cream dinner.  Happy Father's Day, Justin!  You are a wonderful father and a great husband.
Aside from that we've been keeping busy over the last month.  We've had playdates.  We went strawberry picking (or strawberry eating for the kids).  We got the kids' pictures taken for the first time.  We've been visiting the library to get books (and more books!) and see shows.  Last week Rebecca and Justin saw a drumming/dance show.  This week there is a magician.  We have started our weekly walks to the farmer's market.  We've been doing a lot of baking, and Rebecca is helping plan meals.  Rebecca is becoming quite a chef!  We still drive out to the farm for milk every other week.  Today Rebecca starts dance class.  Next week she'll start swimming lessons.
Today is another exciting day...we are waiting to hear news about the birth of our niece!

Abram and Rebecca are both growing well and keeping us busy.
Rebecca has started to wear underwear to bed at night...and so far no accidents.  She's been doing well staying dry for a while now.  She is very excited that she gets to pick out a special prize at the store this week for doing so well.  Rebecca is still our little bookworm.  We go through library books very quickly...long, chapter books.  Some days Mary and Rebecca will read an entire 60-80 page book in one sitting while Abram naps.  All of our reading together seems to be paying off...Rebecca is starting to read by herself!  She can sound out simple words and is reading full sentences.  We started with three-letter words.  But she is already sounding out some four and five-letter words.  She is so excited to read and learn.  Rebecca's world is all about books.  When she plays/pretends she does so in the form of a book.  She'll tell you the title of the book and what part of the story is on each page.  Maybe she'll be an author some day.  We know she'll be more than ready for preschool in the fall.  Hopefully doing Spanish immersion will be challenging enough for her.
Abram is the complete opposite of his sister.  He enjoys books...for about five seconds.  In general he wants to be on the move!  He loves to climb whatever he can.  His latest feat is climbing into the dining room chairs and standing at the table.  He loves to close doors, especially the swinging door to the kitchen.  Abram wants to go outside pretty much all day.  After breakfast he sits in the pile of shoes by the door and repeats "socks, socks."  And if you don't oblige he starts to eat the shoes to get your attention.  Pretty soon Abram may be our 2nd helper in the kitchen.  He loves to play with the dishes/utensils to "make" food.  Then he "feeds" us.  He can sit for quite some time just mixing and feeding.  Abram is starting to say a few more words.  He still doesn't have a need to talk much since his sister rarely stops talking.  Abram is also majorly teething right now.  Three of his one-year molars have pushed through, but the last one is causing him problems.  So his sleep hasn't been the best lately.  He's still our early riser.

Both kids are growing and learning and keep us busy!  It's fun to watch them develop their individual personalities.  We're looking forward to a fun summer of trips to the park, the zoo and the library, dance, swimming and camps and a family trip to Chicago.
